Are Court Records Public in Klickitat County?
Washington General Rule 31 (GR 31) sets the baseline: all court records are presumed open to the public unless restricted by federal law, state law, court rule, court order, or case law. This applies to both physical records at the courthouse and electronic records available through online portals.
Categories of records that are generally open to the public:
- Civil case filings, orders, and judgments
- Criminal felony case records (charging documents, pleas, sentencing orders)
- Dissolution (divorce) decrees and final orders
- Probate filings and estate records
- Protection order records (with certain victim information redacted)
- Misdemeanor and infraction records held by the District Courts
Categories of records that are confidential or restricted from public access:
- Juvenile court records (dependency, delinquency, at-risk youth, truancy)
- Adoption records and paternity records (except final orders)
- Mental illness commitment records
- Alcohol and drug treatment commitment records
- Financial account information in court filings
- Family law cases where a court order seals specific documents
- Victim identity information in certain criminal and domestic violence cases
The Washington Courts public access brochure offers a practical overview of what is and is not accessible under GR 31. When records are restricted, you will generally need a court order to access the sealed portions.
