How to Look Up a Court Case in Island County?
Start by identifying which court handled the case. The Superior Court has jurisdiction over felonies, civil cases above the District Court's limits, family law matters, and probate. Requesting Copies
You can order copies through the Digital Archives, in person at the Clerk's Office, or by mail. The fee structure for superior court documents is:
- Non-certified copies: $0.50 per page
- Certified copies: $5.00 for the first page, $1.00 per additional page per document
Most cases filed since 2007 are available at the lobby of the Law and Justice Facility in Coupeville. Records older than five years, or inactive case files, may be stored at the Offsite County Storage facility—call the Clerk's Office before visiting to confirm availability. Filings can be submitted in person, by mail to 1 NE 7th Street, Coupeville, WA 98239, or electronically through fax filing. A $30 presentation fee applies when submitting proposed orders for a judge's signature without appearing at the hearing, payable through nCourt.
Are Court Records Public in Island County?
Court records in Island County are generally presumed open to public inspection. Washington's General Rule 31 establishes that the public has access to all court records except those restricted by federal law, state law, court rule, court order, or case law. Under this rule, any member of the public may request to view or obtain copies of non-restricted case files through the appropriate court clerk.
The Washington Public Records Act (PRA) governs access to government records more broadly, but it does not apply directly to court records—those fall under the judiciary's own access rules. Records held by executive-branch agencies such as the Sheriff's Office, however, are subject to the PRA.

- Mental health competency evaluations – Not available for public inspection
- Confidential informant information – Protected during ongoing criminal investigations

When a record contains both public and confidential material, the confidential portions are redacted before the document is released.
Island County Criminal Court Records

Washington State Patrol Criminal History
The Washington State Patrol (WSP) maintains the statewide criminal history repository, which receives conviction and arrest data from criminal justice agencies across Washington, including those in Island County. The public can access conviction records through several methods:
- Online: Use the WATCH (Washington Access to Criminal History) system. The fee is $11 per name searched. Results include conviction information and arrests less than one year old with pending dispositions. Per RCW 10.97, non-conviction data is not available to the public, and vacated cases, sealed records, and misdemeanor traffic violations are excluded.

The Island County Sheriff's Office maintains records of arrests and incidents within its jurisdiction. The Sheriff's Office does not accept debit or credit card payments for records—cash or check only. Copy fees follow Island County Resolution C-46-22, which sets photocopies at $0.15 per page and scanned electronic records at $0.10 per page. Inspecting records in person is free of charge.

Property ownership, valuation, and tax records are maintained by the Island County Assessor's Office, which offers an online parcel search tool for looking up property details by account number, owner name, or property address. Marriage Records
Marriage licenses in Island County are issued by the Island County Auditor's Office. Both parties must appear in person between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and sign an affidavit before a deputy auditor or notary public. The marriage license fee is $160, payable by cash, check, money order, or debit/credit card ($2 surcharge for cards). A three-day waiting period applies after issuance, and the license must be used within 60 days. After the ceremony, the officiant has 30 days to return the completed paperwork to the Auditor's Office. Certified copies of the marriage certificate cost $3 each thereafter.

Birth and Death Records
Island County birth and death certificates are available through Island County Public Health at the Coupeville office only (1 NE 6th Street, Coupeville, WA 98239), Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:45 PM. Each certified copy costs $30. Applicants must complete the appropriate form—either the birth certificate application or the death certificate application. Birth and death records are classified as vital records under Washington law and are not open to the general public. Eligible requesters include the record subject, immediate family, and legal representatives. The Washington Department of Health also issues vital records dating from 1907 to the present for $25 by mail.
Island County Probate Court Records
Probate proceedings in Island County are heard by the Superior Court. These cases cover will probate, estate administration, appointment of personal representatives, guardianship for minors and incapacitated adults, conservatorships, and trust-related disputes.
