Douglas County, Washington, occupies the north-central part of the state with Waterville as its county seat. The county’s court system — comprising a Superior Court and a District Court — produces official legal records for every proceeding brought before those courts, whether civil, criminal, family, probate, or juvenile in nature. These records document hearing dates, parties involved, filed motions and pleadings, judgments, orders, sentences, and case outcomes. They are maintained by the Clerk of Superior Court and the District Court office, both of which serve as the official custodians of their respective records.

Washington court case information can be located through several channels: official court offices, public access terminals at the courthouse, and online tools. For those starting their research, WashingtonStateCourts.us may assist in locating publicly available case information and directing users toward the appropriate county-level and statewide resources.

Are Court Records Public in Douglas County?

Court records in Douglas County are generally available for public inspection under the Washington Public Records Act (RCW 42.56), which establishes a strong presumption in favor of public disclosure. The Act broadly defines public records and requires agencies to make them available promptly unless a specific statutory exemption applies.

Records that are restricted or confidential under Washington law include:

  • Juvenile court proceedings, including dependency, offender, and at-risk youth cases
  • Adoption records
  • Certain mental illness proceedings
  • Sealed records (such as expunged criminal charges)
  • Records subject to privacy redactions, including Social Security numbers, financial account details, and private contact information
  • Active law enforcement investigatory materials

The Douglas County Clerk’s fee schedule also notes specific exemptions for certain filers — for instance, petitioners seeking civil protection orders are not charged filing fees or copy fees, and no fees are assessed for juvenile dependency filings. When a record is sealed or exempt, it will not appear in statewide online searches and must be requested with appropriate authorization.

The District Court also maintains a Probation Department to monitor compliance with sentencing conditions. Fine payments for District Court matters can be submitted online or through Dynamic Collectors at (800) 464-3457.
